Pranab Says No question of rollback Money
KOLKATA: A day before an opposition-sponsored country-wide strike on fuel price hike, Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said the government was in no mood to soften its stance on the matter. ''(There is) no question of a rollback,'' the FM said on the sidelines of a programme organized by Assocham on Sunday. ''It is up to the political parties to decide their form of protest. I have no comments to make on this,'' he said.
Last month, the government, worried over the impact of subsidies on the finances of oil marketing companies, had raised the prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene to reduce the burden on the exchequer. It had also given oil companies the freedom to fix the price of petrol. Subsequently, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had also said that decontrol of diesel prices was on the agenda.
Last Friday, RBI raised both the repo and reverse repo rates in an attempt to keep inflation, which could be triggered on account of the fuel price hike, under check. ''As far as interest rates are concerned, the increase of repo and reverse repo rates by 25 basis points is appropriate and a welcome measure. I do hope it will be subsumed in the new policy statement that will be made by the RBI on July 27,'' he said. Although food inflation declined by 3.98 percentage points to 12.92% in the week ending June 19, essential items like pulses, fruits and milk are still expensive.

Dhoni ties knot with longtime friend Sakshi in Dehradun
DEHRADUN: Rapid-fire batting and a passion for fast bikes. That's long been the Mahi way. And on Sunday, the Indian cricket captain's love for speed was once again on display. Within a day of Dhoni's engagement to Sakshi Singh Rawat, the couple got married at Vishranti Resort, located in the usually sleepy Lower Kandoli village, around 25km from Dehradun. In keeping with a romance that was kept tightly under wraps for almost two years, the wedding too was a fiercely private affair, with only family and close friends in attendance.
There were barely 50 guests, though some 10 dishes had been prepared. Given Dhoni's son-of-the-soil, feet firmly grounded image, the cuisine was predictably all-Indian, with nary an exotic dish in sight.
Dhoni reportedly wore a midnight blue sherwani. Ashish, the man who got the mare that Dhoni rode to the wedding, was ecstatic at having the Indian skipper as a client. Said he, "Dhoni asked me the name of the mare. I told him it had two names, Rani and Bobby. He liked the second better. At the end of the ride, he gave me Rs 5,001."
According to sources, the jaimala ceremony took place at 9.30pm followed by the pheras at 11pm. Dhoni wore a sehra, said to be priced at Rs 10,000, made by Charandas of Dehradun's famous Paltan Bazar.
The resort, owned by former Ranji Trophy player Michael Dalvi, is in the thickets of the Mussorrie foothills. From Vasundhara Raje Scindia and Adhiraj Singh, to cricketers like Arun Lal and Bollywood royalty, it's hosted them all. But Sunday's ceremony could well make it a local tourist attraction.
Meanwhile, even as fans burst crackers and distributed sweets in Dhoni's home town Ranchi, the ceremony itself was a closely-guarded affair.
The resort, spread over 125 acres, was ringed with two-tier security. The inner ring comprised private security guards while 400 policemen from Uttarakhand cordoned off the resort. Mediapersons were stopped 2km away from the resort. Sakshi's cousin, IPS officer Abhilasha Bisht, was said to be helping supervise the security arrangements.
Actor John Abraham ^ a close friend of Dhoni's who will be hosting a party for the couple in Mumbai on Wednesday ^ was among the celebrities present. Around half an hour before the auspicious time, Dhoni on horseback and other guests on foot moved to the bride's place, located on the same resort's premises.
John's girlfriend and actress Bipasha Basu couldn't be there, but tweeted her best wishes. "Wishing Mahi and Sakshi a very happy life together forever. Sad that I can't be there," she wrote.
Bipasha also revealed that contrary to the popular notion that Dhoni decided to get married on the spur of the moment, the wedding was planned months in advance.
"The wedding on Sunday night was all planned. But no one was supposed to know about it. Whatever the truth, we must all be happy for the couple. It's party time!" she said.
Of the Indian cricketers, only Suresh Raina, R P Singh, and Harbhajan Singh were present. Raina, who's known for his fancy footwork on the cricket pitch, was also reported to have displayed it with much gusto during the baraat procession.
BCCI bigwigs were also invited, but most couldn't make it as they were busy inaugurating indoor cricket facilities in Ranchi. The notable exception who did turn up was N Srinivasan, vice-chairman and managing director of India Cements which owns Chennai Super Kings, the Indian Premier League team captained by Dhoni
The locals got to know about the high-profile wedding on Saturday morning itself when innumerable cars kept passing the area and the frequency increased on Sunday morning till the marriage actually began. Also, a lot of the local people took their cars and two-wheelers to get a view of their favourite captain's wedding. But they faced the same fate as the media -- no entry. Still, it was an exciting day for them in the woods.
The 29-year-old cricketer from Ranchi has been one of the hottest bachelor boys of India. His clean and straightforward image has fetched him dozens of endorsements making him among the highest-earning cricketers in the world.
Incidentally, while Dhoni now lives in Jharkand, his family hails from a village near Binsar in Uttarakhand.
Both the skipper and his bride are pahadis. Like the rest of his brethren, Dhoni is a deeply religious and spiritual person. The locals say that his long hair, and the subsequent cut, was on account of a mannat he made to a local deity for a place in the Indian team first, and gesture of gratitude later.
Sakshi's father and Dhoni's father reportedly worked together in Ranchi. Her grandfather, a retired divisional forest officer, lives in Dehradun. The couple know each other from their days in DAV School, Ranchi

Bhandh In INdia
New Delhi, Jul 5 : The 'Bharat bandh', called by all major non-UPA parties to protest against the ever-increasing prices of essential commodities and recent fuel price hike, started at 0600 hrs today.
''We are protesting against the UPA Government's decision to deregularise fuel prices. The bandh has been called for the people, so that they can register their protest against the government,'' said a Delhi BJP leader.
The impact of the 12 hour-long bandh was minimal in the morning as DTC buses, autos and other private vehicles were plying on the roads normally.
The bandh is expected to show its impact as the day progresses.
Taking precautionary measures the Delhi government has deployed police personnel and commandos at all important establishments.
Several dharnas and demonstrations are to be organised by the state BJP to register its protest against the rising prices.
BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, party's senior leader Rajnath Singh, JD(U) president Sharad Yadav and senior Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa would participate in the agitation.
The Left parties, including CPI(M), CPI, AIFB and RSP, along with AIADMK, Telugu Desam Party, Samajwadi Party, Biju Janata Dal, Janata Dal(S) and Indian National Lok Dalhave, have also appealed to all sections of the society to participate in the nation-wide 'hartal' to register their protest against the recent hike in fuel prices which would put further burden on people.
The BJP has sent its senior leaders out to various state capitals to lead demonstrations and protest marches.
According to party sources, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will lead a protest in Bhopal, while Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley and vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi will lead in Lucknow.
Venkaiah Naidu will lead in Hyderabad, Ananth Kumar in Bangalore, Gopinath Munde in Mumbai and Vasundhara Raje in Jaipur.
Termed as ''opposition unity'', the bandh will target all services except healthcare and railways.
The BJP has even asked school managements and parents to refrain from sending their children to school.
The CPI(M) accused the Congress-led Government at the Centre of being directly responsible for the rise in food prices.
''The deregulation of prices are meant to help the private oil companies and put the people at the mercy of a market-controlled by the multinational oil companies and the domestic corporates,'' the party Politburo said.
''By these steps, the Congress-led government is directly responsible for the spiralling price rise of food items and essential commodities,'' it added.
''This powerful all India protest action should serve as a warning to the government not to heap burdens on the people and to withdraw the price hike measures,'' the party said.
Meanwhile, the government has termed the bandh as ''totally unjustified'' and claimed that the price hike of petroleum products has minimal impact on the common man.
Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said the Opposition was misleading the people as these parties had been instrumental in notifying the deregulation of the prices of petroleum products and reducing subsidies in November 1997 and in implementing the programme from April 2002.
''Therefore, Bandh call is not only unjustified but also against the interest of common man and daily wage earners who could be deprived of their wages, besides causing inconvenience to the public at large,'' he said.
''We are protesting against the UPA Government's decision to deregularise fuel prices. The bandh has been called for the people, so that they can register their protest against the government,'' said a Delhi BJP leader.

President Patil warns against threat from diabetes
Mumbai, July 4 : President Pratibha Patil on Sunday said preventive steps should be undertaken to tackle the rising threat of lifestyle diseases, and stressed on the need to hold awareness camps to combat diabetes.
President Patil, while speaking during a foundation stone laying function of a hospital here, sought to draw attention towards the number of diabetic patients in the country which is feared to rise to 80 million by 2030.
"The World Health Organisation has cautioned that India would become the diabetics' capital of the world. Diabetics in India are currently around 42 million, and it is estimated that this figure will almost double and rise to 80 million by 2030," said President Patil.
"A comprehensive approach is needed to combat the increasing prevalence of these lifestyle diseases. Our health system, therefore, must assume the responsibility of not only treating people but also advising and guiding them about how to deal and indeed prevent some of these medical conditions," she added.
The President said regular campaigns should be organized by the government and institutions to create awareness on a wide scale.
"The Cardiological Society of India has estimated that the country is likely to have 100 million heart patients. The World Health Organisation has calculated diabetes and heart disease in India would mean a loss of about 335 billion dollars over the next ten years," she added.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who was also present on this occasion, said that the state could provide more hospitals.

Advani slams Congress over inflation, claims nationwide shutdown will be a success
New Delhi, July 4 : Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani on Sunday slammed Congress led Government at the Centre for being insensitive towards inflation.
"Unfortunately, there is no indication that the government has any solution to control inflation. Forget about the solution, they have become insensitive about the issue," said Advani.
Talking about the all-India shutdown on Monday, Advani said that it would be for the first time that so many opposition parties would come together and support the 'Bharat Bandh'.
"Tomorrow may be the first time in the history of Indian politics, where almost all political parties come together to support the shutdown," said Advani.
Meanwhile, Sharad Yadav said the members of several parties have been organising meetings regarding the shut down and it will be the kind of shutdown, which the country has never witnessed before.
"Workers are organising meetings on district, state, national level. The public is suffering a lot, so I want to say that the shutdown will definitely be successful, and a unique one, like the country has never seen before," said Yadav.
The shutdown has been called to protest the soaring prices of commodities.
Earlier on June 25, a ministerial panel headed by Mukherjee, had lifted the pricing controls on petroleum following which the price of petrol went up by Rs 3.50 a litre.
The Government hiked the prices of diesel by Rs.2 a litre, kerosene by Rs.3 a litre and cooking gas by Rs.35 per cylinder.

The Government hiked the prices of diesel by Rs.2 a litre, kerosene by Rs.3 a litre and cooking gas by Rs.35 per cylinder.
