Synopsis:

PonnariMangalam is a small village in Kerala. Like any other village, you will find all kinds of simple but lively characters in PonnariMagalam too.

Let us get to know some of the representatives of this small village.

- A politician Moithu Pilakandi(Kalabhavan Mani)
- an Ex-armyman Gopalji(Mala) - Noboday except him knows whether he really was in Army
- a Panchayat President Sulochana(Bindu Panicker)
- an ayurveda physician - Nayar(Innacent)
- a Velichappadu (Oduvil Unnikrishnan)
- a Teashop owner Hamsa(Mamukkoya)
- a water authority employee Kumaran(Jagathy) who is under suspension
- a local sub Inspector jabbar(Salim Kumar) who is a coward
- a fancy store owner Suku(Sudheesh)
- a petty theif (Indrans)
- a LIC agent Prabhakaran(Machan Varghese)

When the film opens we are told that there is a communal tension brewing in this peaceful village. A unit of Rapid Action Force (RAF) led by Captain Pattabhiraman (Mammootty) and his assistant Benny (Biju menon) arrives in the village as peace keepers . The villagers do not have any good things to think about the army from the stories what they have heard from Gopalji(Mala). They were anxious about all the developments. Each one of them look at the army in their own view point.Army gets involved into the villagers problems and becomes a part of their life. Slowly the villagers started liking the soldiers.

Capt.Pattabhiraman, a chronic Bachelor all these years develops a soft corner for Vimala (Tessa), a postal employee and a war widow. Later in a long drawn-out flashback it is revealed that Pattabhiraman was responsible for the death of Lieutenant Nandu (Indrajeet), Vimala's husband who had to cancel his leave and go back to the North-East to fight terrorists on the day of his marriage! Meanwhile Benny, captain's assistant has a good time with Satyabhama (Jyothirmayi) and gets married to her. More trouble in the form of some terrorist organizations, which tries to poison the villager's water tank. The rest of the story is about the incidents that follow and how Major and his army takes control over the village.

Even though there are flaws in the screenplay, "Pattalam" is watchable thanks to it's simplicity. There are too many characters, but each one of them are essential in such a village backdrop. The movie has it's own hilarious moments. All the actors like Innacent, Bindu Panicker, Jagathy, Kalabhavan Mani, Indrans and Salim Kumar have portayed their characters in the best possible way anyone could imagine. There could be a problem due to the expectations of malayalees have about Mammootty essaying an army officer role. Everyone expects him as a serious tough officer, but which is not the case in the movie. Instead Pattibhiraman is a simple person. Telivision actress Tessa does an okay debut but she has to improve her acting skills. Jyothirmayi has nothing much to do. Biju Menon is as good as always.

Plot

Kalyani (Renjini) is the daughter of a wealthy NRI, who has property in Kerala. Kalyani, brought up in Kerala by her uncle Kaimal (Nedumudi Venu), falls in love and decides to marry against the wishes of her father. When her boyfriend finds out that she will be disinherited, he ditches her at the altar.
After a short while, her father decides to retract his disapproval and spend a fortnight's vacation with his daughter and son-in-law. Because her father is already ill and because this may be his last vacation, Kalyani and Kaimal want to make it as happy for him as possible. They decide to conceal the fact that her boyfriend dumped her.
They hire Vishnu (Mohanlal) to play the part of the husband for a fortnight. Meanwhile, another of her uncles who is caretaker of the property and expected to inherit it when Kalyani was disinherited is determined not to let go without a fight. He knows that Vishnu is not Kalyani's boyfriend and suspects that he is only acting. He makes various botched attempts to prove this. Vishnu and Kalyani are not getting along and keep bickering.
Over time, Kalyani begins to fall in love with Vishnu and hopes to marry him for real. Meanwhile, they have a mysterious visitor in (M.G. Soman), who claims to be a relative of Vishnu.
Vishnu finally reveals the truth about his past to Kalyani. Vishnu is actually an escaped convict from a jail in which (M.G. Soman) is the warden. Vishnu is a photographer and he was married to Lizy, a deaf mute dancer. They also have a child. Vishnu discovers that a man was visiting his wife when he was not around and begins to suspect her fidelity.
Coming home one day, he finds the man there and tried to attack him. Lizy dies in the scuffle that follows and he discovers that the man is her brother who has been involved in illegal activities. He regrets his anger and confesses to murdeing his wife. He tells Kalyani that he escaped to make money for a surgery on his child. He also reveals that the warden has come to arrest him but has delayed the arrest till her father leaves.
After a happy fortnight, Kalyani's father returns to the US, Vishnu goes to jail where the gallows await him and Kalyani takes custody of his child.
