Thieves threaten elderly woman, steal jewellery

CHENNAI: Burglars broke into a lawyer's house in Adyar and escaped with valuables after threatening an elderly woman early on Sunday morning.

Police said two burglars entered the house through the open back door and went to the room near the hall, where advocate Surendar's mother Suseela Devi, 78, sleeps. One of them threatened her with a knife while the other made her hand over her bangles and earrings.

As soon as the thieves fled, Suseela Devi called for help. Surendar, who sleeps in another room, woke up and rushed to his mother's room. As she was in shock, she was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police said the robbers got away with jewellery worth Rs 1.25 lakh. They suspect that four people might have been involved — the two who committed the robbery and two who were on watch outside.

"The accused did not hide their faces. We have shown Suseela Devi pictures of some ex-convicts to identify the accused. Forensic experts have taken fingerprints from the crime scene," an officer said. Police have launched a hunt for the accused.

Police said special teams have been formed to solve cases faster as there has been a spurt in crimes in Adyar and Neelankarai. "The teams will maintain vigil in the area. Team members will be in plainclothes and mingle with people,"
said Adyar deputy commissioner of police NK Senthamaraikannan.
