CHENNAI: Nine autorickshaw drivers involved in an illegal race on the Irumbuliyur-Maduravoyal bypass road early on Sunday were nabbed by the suburban police. The drivers were fined and let off.
On Saturday, the suburban commissionerate got information that an autorickshaw race would be held on the Irumbuliyur-Maduravoyal bypass road and a police team was on Sunday morning posted near fuel outlets, shops and other places along the stretch. They were instructed to avoid being spotted by the "racing" drivers.
"Around 5am, nine autorickshaws assembled on the Maduravoyal bypass road and in a few minutes the race began. The policemen emerged from their hideouts on their motorbikes," said traffic assistant commissioner of police Sunderarajan.
Seeing them, the autorickshaw drivers tried to flee but the policemen chased and caught them and then took them to the police station. "They said the race was just for fun. But it poses a risk to the lives of pedestrians and motorists," said Sunderarajan.
The autorickshaws were seized and a fine of Rs 9,000 collected from the drivers. "What they have done is an offence under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act (rash and negligent driving). Next time, they will be remanded," he said.
Suburban commissioner S R Jangid, said: "These guys ride at great speed and cause accidents. It can't be allowed. We will take action against all those involved in such races."
